Edible gold! Man pays $30k for tray of mangoes

IT WAS gold, gold, gold for Carlo Lorenti who outbid his rivals for this season's symbolic first tray of the golden fruit at this year's Brisbane Markets Mango Auction.

The Mango King secured his crown on Thursday after a bid of $30,000 with the funds to be donated to Diabetes Queensland and Life Education Queensland.

But it is not the first time the Clayfield Markets Fresh owner had taken the crown. He outbid his rivals in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011 and shared the crown last year.

Mr Lorenti said he had great incentive to dig deep this year after he saw first-hand the struggle it presented families after his manager's son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year.
