Man on murder charge faces two assault charges

POLICE are alleging the 31-year-old man accused of murdering Tabulam woman Brenda Rose Hickling also assaulted two of the woman's relatives.

Stanley Joseph John Ward, 31, whose last address was listed as Crescent Head, appeared before Lismore Local Court on Tuesday, charged with murder, two charges of common assault and possessing 1g of cannabis.

Police claim Ward, who was unrepresented in court, murdered his partner Ms Hickling, 32, between 7pm on June 5 and 6.47am on June 6.

They also allege he assaulted Theresa Joyce Hickling between 5pm and 8pm on June 5 and Eric Alfred Hickling between 5pm and 8pm on June 6.

During the court mention, Magistrate David Heilpern noted that bail was not applied for and was formally refused.

He ordered that a brief of evidence be served by July 15 and adjourned the matter for Director of Public Prosecutions' first mention on July 22.

Ward remained silent for most of the brief court proceedings.

Police allege they arrived at a Gundingbo Ave, Tabulam home just after 2am on June 6 to find Brenda Rose Hickling unconscious on a bedroom floor. She died at the scene.

Ward was arrested there, charged and refused bail.
