A 40-YEAR-OLD man has miraculously escaped a high-impact crash that launched a steel guard rail about 100m into a paddock.

Such was the impact with the bridge that a tyre from the man's Ford Falcon sedan ended up about 70m away in a paddock on the opposite side of the road to the guard rail.

The car came to rest on the Eton Vale bridge over Hodgson Ck on the New England Hwy, south of Toowoomba, about 3.15pm.

Police were grateful no other motorists had been collected by the sedan.

A school bus full of children was among the vehicles caught in the queue of oncoming traffic stopped from heading past scene.

Cambooya police officer-in-charge Senior Constable Cameron Warman said the man had been travelling north on the highway.

"He appears to have failed to negotiate the right-hand bend, overcorrected, crossed the centre line and struck the opposite guard rail of the bridge," Snr Const. Warman said.

"The cause of the crash appears to be driver error."

He said witnesses would be interviewed for insight into the man's driving in the lead up to the crash.

"Given the damage to the vehicle and the bridge, the driver is very lucky.

"We are fortunate this hasn't been a fatality.

"It is also lucky he didn't collide with an oncoming vehicle."

A 75mm diameter pipe had gone into one side of the man's car and protruded from the other side.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service Toowoomba station officer Greg Stewart said firefighters had to remove part of a seat and a rear door in order give paramedics access to get the injured man onto a stretcher.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the man was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with a compound fracture to his right foot.

Traffic was diverted around the scene at the Cambooya Connection Rd and the Drayton Connection Rd until the highway was reopened about 6.20pm.
