Man granted bail over death of house intruder

THE man accused of murdering Ballina man Ricky Slater-Dickson has been granted bail in the Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday.

The decision to grant conditional bail to Benjamin Batterham was the trigger for Mr Slater-Dickson's mother, Beryl Dickson, to react emotionally both inside and outside the courthouse yelling at the magistrate and Mr Batterham, who appeared via audio visual link from Cessnock Correctional Centre.

Mr Batterham is accused of the murder of Mr Slater-Dickson after discovering the Ballina man had allegedly broken into his Hamilton home near Newcastle in the early hours of the morning.

Court documents state Batterham, allegedly murdered Mr Slater-Dickson between 3.30am on Saturday, the time of the alleged break-in, and 11.20am on Easter Sunday, when Mr Slater-Dickson's life support was switched off.

It's believed after chasing him down the street and a brief struggle Mr Slater-Dickson may have been placed in a choke hold.

He was taken to hospital, but never regained consciousness.
