King hit victim fights for life as accused attacker charged

A YOUNG man was fighting for his life on Wednesday in the same hospital where king hit victim Thomas Kelly died after being attacked in eerily similar circumstances.

Dan Christie, 18, was found with serious head injuries on the same corner in Victoria St in Sydney's Kings Cross where Thomas, who was also 18, was punched in the head last year.

Mr Christie underwent surgery at St Vincent's hospital and was still believed to be in a critical condition on Wednesday night.

On the night Mr Kelly was hit, his killer Kieran Loveridge had already assaulted two men.

In the moments before Dan Christie was hit, his alleged attacker - Shaun McNeil of Pennant Hills - was allegedly assaulting two men and bragging about his experience as a martial arts fighter.

Mr McNeil, 25, was arrested and charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning bodily harm and other assault related offences.

He was refused bail.

St Vincents Hospital, which is two blocks from the notorious red light district, treated a patient for assault related injuries every 30 minutes on New Year's Eve.

Professor Gordian Fulde told the Herald Mr Christie was "one of many" who arrived at the hospital unconscious.

More than 400 people across Sydney were treated by paramedics for alcohol and assault related injuries.
