Partygoers threw lawnmower at police

A 24-year-old Ballina man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly assaulted police and escaped their custody after being confronted over outstanding warrants.

Police allege that on Wednesday evening Ballina police attended an address in Biala Place where the man was residing, Richmond Local Area Command senior constable David Henderson said..

There were numerous people at the house at this time for a party, snr const Henderson said.

Police saw the man looking at them through a window.

Police had their efforts to lawfully enter the house resisted by people who blocked their way.

Police entered and arrested the man, then had glass and plastic bottles thrown at them.

Police were also abused and jostled by the partygoers.

As police exited the property a lawnmower was thrown at them, narrowly missing police.

Between 10 and 15 people then hindered police as they tried to leave with the man they just arrested.

As a result of this the man escaped from police.

A sergeant received a bite and two other senior constables received injuries from people inside the house.

These injuries were not from the arrested man, snr const Henderson said.

At 9am today police received information that the man was at Biala Place.

Police attended a short time later, where permission to enter the premises was given.

He was arrested without incident, and charged with two warrants, escape police custody, assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was bail refused by Ballina Local Court and will reappear at Court in two weeks.

Further investigation is being undertaken into the people who assaulted police.
