Man dies, but the party goes on

A 51-YEAR-OLD Barkers Vale man was killed near a dance party at Wadeville early yesterday morning.

The man was believed to have died instantly when he was hit by a car as he walked along Kyogle Road near the party site.

Police are working on the assumption the man was in the area attending the dance party.

The party, which was not an official MardiGrass event but reportedly attracted about 2000 to 2500 revellers, was held illegally.

Police said yesterday attempts had been made to shut down the doof party, but that organisers kept the event going.

It was eventually stopped at about 9.30am yesterday.

While police investigations into the man’s death will continue, there could be further action taken against the party organisers by Kyogle Council, including possible fines and civil action.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old driver of the car which hit the victim was uninjured, as was his female passenger.

Both were taken to hospital for checks, with the driver undergoing mandatory urine and blood testing.

Police spoke to the driver with no charges being laid.

A report on the fatality will be sent to the State Coroner in the next few days.
