Man dies after car hits tree
AN 18 year-old Casino man has been killed in the third fatal crash on Northern Rivers roads in two days when the car he was driving hit a tree east of Casino.
Police said the crash occurred around 8pm last night on Naughtons Gap Rd when the man lost control of the Ford Falcon sedan after negotiating a left hand bend and crossed onto the wrong side of the road and hit a tree.
When Police, Paramedics and other emergency services attended the scene they found the teenager clinging to life.
Despite their extensive efforts the man died at the scene.
A 19 year-old Casino man who was a passenger in the front of the sedan suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lismore Base Hospital.
Naughtons Gap Rd was closed for four hours while detectives from the Ballina Crash Investigations unit examined the scene.
The crash came a day after three people died and several more were seriously injured in separate tragedies at Leeville, south of Casino, and at Woodburn.
It is also the second fatality in less than three years on Naughtons Gap Rd.
On December 14, 2010 a 14 year-old boy who was a passenger in a Commodore ute was killed in a head on collision with a Toyota Corolla.
A report on the man's death will be prepared for the coroner.
Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact Richmond Local Area Command or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
