A MAN has been critically injured in a head on collision at Murwillumbah.

The man, aged in his mid to late 20s, sustained suspected head and pelvic injuries in the crash, which happened near the intersection of Tumbulgum and Cane Roads.

He was flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital by an RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter for immediate specialist treatment in a critical condition.

RACQ CareFlight Rescue Aircrewman Ryan Purchase said the man was entrapped in his vehicle for a short period before emergency services could extricate him from the wreckage.

"The Critical Care Doctor and Flight Intensive Care Paramedic on-board CareFlight's helicopter treated the man's serious injuries, which also included a suspected fractured leg," he said.
