Man charged over Koonorigan cannabis raid

LISMORE police station's garage smelt like 100 pot-smokers had been locked inside it for a month yesterday as officers unloaded one of the biggest local drug hauls in years.

More than 130 cannabis plants, ranging from 40cm to three metres tall, were found on a property at Koonorigan, near Nimbin, when Richmond Local Area Command officers searched the property about 10.30am.

Also found at the property were about 30 kilograms of high-quality cannabis head.

Police have charged a 54-year-old Koonorigan man with cultivating and possessing a prohibited drug and deemed supply of a prohibited drug. He has been bailed to appear in the Lismore Local Court. It is alleged the man also had 577 grams of cannabis seed in his possession.

"Police acted on information received to target the premises and after securing a search warrant through the Lismore Local Court police then executed the warrant," Acting Superintendent Steve Clarke said.

"Police will continue to work with the community targeting those growing and distributing prohibited drugs in the command area. Police will continue to allocate resources targeting all prohibited drugs in keeping with the state plan."
