Man charged over alleged abduction

FAST action by police defused a potentially volatile standoff with a 23-year-old Lismore man who allegedly abducted and assaulted a woman in bushland on Keen Street yesterday afternoon.

Police rushed to a residence around 4pm after receiving information about a man acting irrationally.

They located the suspect and the victim some distance from the house at about 5.20pm. A short standoff ensued before the woman managed to free herself.

The man fled on foot and was apprehended a short distance away as he attempted to jump a barbed wire fence. Upon arrest police seized a knife.

The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Lismore Base Hospital where she was treated for extensive facial injuries, two stab wounds to right leg and bruising to her body. She has since been released from Hospital.

Police charged the man with aggravated kidnapping, malicious wounding, using a weapon to avoid apprehension and supplying a prohibited drug.

He appeared in Lismore Local Court today and was remanded in custody to appear again at a later date.
