A MAN has been arrested over the murder of two young women in the South Australian outback.

The 19-year-old is accused of killing Quorn woman, Jessie Leigh Fullerton, 22, after she saw him with missing Port Pirie teenager Rebecca Wild.

Jessie's body was found lying next to her car near a local hotel on Wednesday and 16-year-old Rebecca's body was dumped at a cemetery.

Major crime squad detectives arrested a 19-year-old male, known to both victims, at his Quorn home on Wednesday night.

Detective Superintendent Grant Moyle told reporters at a conference on Thursday he thought "nothing much" could surprise him anymore but the circumstances surrounding the double murder "certainly has".

He said he was confident the accused was the only person involved in the murders but could release few details as the charges were before the court.

Police excavated a shallow grave site at the Quorn cemetery on Thursday.

A search was also carried out at the local SES headquarters where the accused volunteered.
