Man to be "speared" and jailed for killing partner

A MAN has accepted a traditional Aboriginal punishment, on top of a jail sentence, as punishment for the manslaughter of his partner.

Danny Ferguson has been found guilty of killing partner Serena Amos in the outback South Australian town of Oodnadatta in 2015.

The court was told Mr Ferguson beat her repeatedly over seven days while camping, eventually causing internal bleeding, renal failure and her death, the ABC reports.

The court heard that Ferguson had accepted a traditional punishment that he will receive after being released from prison -- he will be speared five times through each of his legs.

Justice Anne Vanstone said she would not take the punishment into account when sentencing him.

He was given a 15 year sentence with a 12-year non-parole period.

After that, he will serve time for other offences in the Northern Territory.
