Man arrested over sex shop drug raids

THE alleged owner of a chain of Queensland sex shops based in Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Toowoomba is accused of trafficking synthetic marijuana through the stores.

Yesterday Victorian man David Andre Piccinato, 43, was extradited from Melbourne to Queensland to face Brisbane Magistrates Court today charged with trafficking dangerous drugs.

Mackay Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Detective Senior Sergeant David Tucker said the police executed a search warrant at the Mackay adult store following the deaths of two men in the region in January 2015 from synthetic marijuana.

Det Snr Sgt Tucker said the deaths were a separate, but ongoing investigation.

"This arrest is specifically drug trafficking that had been investigated," he said.

Police will allege the man is the owner of a chain of adult stores in Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Toowoomba - the Love Heart Adult Shop, Det Snr Sgt Tucker said.

"And it will be alleged that synthetic cannabis has been sold out of these stores," he said.

Det Snr Sgt Tucker said this was the first time anyone was charged with trafficking in relation to synthetic marijuana.

Mackay detectives had been involved in the investigation since February 2015.

"We've been assisting Bundaberg police with this investigation," Det Snr Sgt Tucker said.

The investigation began in Bundaberg, he said.

"At the request of Bundaberg CIB a man was arrested by Melbourne detectives (on Wednesday night). He spent the night in the Melbourne watch house," Det Snr Sgt Tucker said.

"We're alleging he's an owner of a chain of adult stores that were involved in selling synthetic cannabis," he said.

He resides in Victoria, but the stores allegedly involved were confined to Queensland. Under Queensland law synthetic marijuana is considered a dangerous drug.
