Man arrested for stealing car, detaining girl at Wadeville

POLICE have charged a teenager after he allegedly stole a car and detained a young girl in Wadeville, north-east of Kyogle, yesterday.

In the early hours of Wednesday, the 19-year-old man stole a vehicle from a home in Anzac Parade, Geneva, police said.

Police allege the man then drove the vehicle to a house in Stoney Chute Road, Nimbin, where he attempted to steal property from the home but was disturbed by the owner.

The man then allegedly drove to Martin Road, Billen Cliffs, where he spoke to a 13-year-old girl and offered to give her a lift to school.

The girl got into the car and it's further alleged that when she asked to get out, the man refused and threatened her.

Police said the man and the 13-year-old girl were known to each other.

The car stopped near a shopping complex in Wadeville and the young girl was able to run from the car and alert a passing motorist, who in turn contacted police.

Officers from Lismore attended the car park of the shopping complex and arrested the man who was still in the alleged stolen car.

He was taken to Lismore Police Station where he was charged with break, enter and steal motor vehicle, and detain for advantage.

He was refused bail and will appear in Lismore Local Court today.
