Man arrested at Woodburn after bush manhunt

A QUEENSLAND man was arrested and charged for vehicle theft and drug possession following a bush manhunt led by the Police Dog Unit near Woodburn yesterday.

Officers from Woodburn and Evans Head responded to the reported theft of a Toyota Landcruiser utility and camper from a property south of Woodburn.

About 10am police located the man with the allegedly stolen utility bogged on a track in bushland off the Pacific Highway, New Italy.

Following a short foot pursuit police established a perimeter and sought the assistance of additional police including the Police Dog Unit.

About 10.50am the 28-year-old emerged from the bush and surrendered himself to police.

A search of the man and a bag located within the vehicle located a quantity of property including the man's passport, a ski mask, a knife, two phones, a GPS, two Queensland motor vehicle registration plates and a plastic satchel containing approximately three grams of white powder alleged to be amphetamine.

The man was taken to Lismore Police Station where he was charged with the following offences: motor vehicle theft; goods in custody; carry a cutting implement; and possessing a prohibited drug.
