Malthouse calls for changes to modern game

BLUES coach Mick Malthouse admits he isn't a fan of the modern game. In fact, if he wasn't coaching he says he might not even watch.

The 701-game coaching veteran told a breakfast ahead of Sunday night's blockbuster against his previous team, Collingwood, the AFL needed to make some rule changes to make the game more entertaining.

"If I wasn't coaching, I'd hate the game. We've moved so far away from what our Australian game was," he said, in reference to the congestion around the ball that can see as many as 20 players in close proximity to each ball-up.

"I don't know if the public really enjoy that … at the end of the day, we're supposed to be entertainers."

Malthouse (pictured) said the modern style had eliminated most of the one-on-one battles from years past.

"Maybe down the track, and we do have some say in where the game is going, we've got to change it," he added.
