Major Magnet: Quit job, make game, deliver awesome

THE proliferation of indie games has been a boon to nostalgic gamers, especially when games like Major Magnet take us back to the glory days of Sonic and Mario.

Two years ago best friends Jared Kasl and Tom Fry left their jobs to found PagodaWest Games and make their own games, and if their breakout offering reminds anyone of Sega's classic, there's a reason for that.

They met while making a fan-made update to Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The pedigree shows. The small team behind Major Magnet make much of their passion for high standards, and the feedback from fans suggests that with this game they've nailed it.

The player controls Major Magnet, an unlikely hero who uses his magnetic gadgets (via the players iPad/iPhone screen) to navigate sonic-esque levels.

Watch the video above to see what I mean when I say that the artwork for this game is, with its lighting, colours and design, spectacular.

The gameplay is remarkably smooth for a touchscreen game built by such a small team. I've yet to play through to the end but the first few levels were easy to play but a pain to master.

If you've got a competitive streak, replaying each level to beat your mates' scores is more fun than farming, though the lack of an Android release at the time of writing might shorten the list of potential competitors.

PLAY IT IF

  • Sonic vs Mario arguments caused you to lose friends as a kid
  • You miss simple, tight and engaging gameplay
  • Holding a high score in your mate's face still satisfies you
