Major electricity network upgrade scheduled for Goonellabah

ESSENTIAL Energy is about to start a major electricity network upgrade in Goonellabah.

Overhead powerlines that cross residential neighbourhoods will be removed and put underground.

Work is expected to start next week around Ballina Rd, Pindari Crescent and Warrawee Court.

Essential Energy's North Coast regional manager, Brendon Neyland, said the work would include trenching and under-boring, as well as an upgrade of the East Lismore zone substation in Warrawee Court.

"Historically, these powerlines have remained in their original location as development and sub-division of the land they're on has occurred around them," he said.

"This is not an ideal situation and we've decided to take the opportunity to carry out this work at the same time as the substation is being upgraded."

Traffic control will be in place over the course of the project, and affected customers will be notified in advance when a power interruption is necessary.

Weather permitting, the work should be completed by November this year.
