Main Roads WA defends stops
Melissa Campbell's letter to Big Rigs, as part of our rest stop campaign, painted a pretty grim image of rest stops and their lack of facilities or maintenance in WA.
A Main Roads WA spokesman said areas for drivers to pull over and rest were in accordance with fatigue management requirements.
"Under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP), more than $20 million has been spent on improving heavy vehicle facilities in WA since 2008," the spokesman said.
That money went into new or expanded road train assembly areas (RTAAs) at Bedfordale, Apple Street, Wubin, Northern, Newman, Broome, Carnarvon and Exmouth.
He also said 40 new or upgraded rest areas along key arterial routes such as the North West Coastal Hwy, Brand Hwy, Great Northern Hwy, Eyre Hwy, Goldfields Hwy and the Geraldton-Mt Magnet Rd had been constructed since 2008.
"At certain locations, such as the RTAAs at Bedfordale, Wubin and Northam, ablution facilities are provided. However, the provision of additional services such as showers, meals, etc, has traditionally been provided by the private sector.
"Main Roads has been working with the private sector to encourage greater investment in roadhouse facilities at a number of locations in the north of the state, including Carnarvon and Newman, as well as along Forrest Hwy in the South West.
"The fourth round of HVSPP funding is expected to be developed later this year and Main Roads will work with industry to identify high priority locations for new or upgraded rest area facilities on the Western Australian road network.
"Main Roads recently established a metropolitan RTAA on Abernethy Rd in Forrestfield to alleviate the issue of operators breaking down vehicle combinations on the roadside in the Welshpool / Kewdale Industrial Areas."
However the spokesman did not say whether existing rest stops would be upgraded with loos soon or whether maintenance had been scheduled to fix current issues.
The spokesman did say, however, that eight pullover and layover bays for over size and over mass loads to park up and allow other vehicles to pass had been completed on the Great Northern Hwy between Newman and Port Hedland.
And more bays were in the planning stage for Great Northern and North West Coastal highways.
