Mail thief makes off with surprising loot

A TOOWOOMBA thief is likely facing a surprise when they open a package stolen from a Toowoomba home.

Sarah-Jane Williamson took to social media to complain of a thief who stole a mail package.

She said the person had taken the package from her mailbox.

"I hope you take joy in owning a wedding cake topper," she said.

A wedding cake topper is a small model that sits on top of the wedding cake, normally a representation of the couple in formal wedding attire.

Although of sentimental value to the purchaser, they are of little resale value.

The incident quickly started a debate on the safety of home delivered packages.

Australia Post, the country's largest retail network offers a tracking service for some items.

Residents can lodge a "delivery issue enquiry" if the item is shown as "delivered" but has not been received.

Sarah Sooki Kershaw took aim at delivery companies, saying it was "terrible" that  they left packages at the front door.

"Every time I go to my mum's place there's always packages at the front door because my brother is obsessed with online shopping. And he's lucky no one has stolen any yet."

Tracey Barton said many people were now taking the step of having parcels delivered to their workplaces to ensure their safe delivery.

"I've had stuff delivered that required a signature but which was dumped and left so now I always have it delivered to work."

Ms Williamson said her tracking number showed the parcel as "delivered".
