Far North Coast win U-17s at NSW Country championships
FAR North Coast won the Under-17 division and had seven players named for higher honours at the NSW Country Rugby Union Championships in Sydney.
They beat Central Coast 24-0 in the final with Hamish Mould, Jack Hackett, Travis Gifford, Riley Wilson, Ben Schaefer, Sam Pearce and Jono Huddy making the NSW Country team.
The players picked represent Ballina, Lennox Head and Wollongbar-Alstonville in the FNC junior competition.
Ben, Jono and Riley have made Country teams in the past with the other four set to play for the first time at the next level.
"It was outstanding, the boys played out of their skin," coach Richard Mould said. "The main thing was that every player contributed and a few more probably should have made the Country team.
"There is plenty of talent in this team and they've been together for a few years but this is the first time they've won it.
"We believed they could do it and they played for each other out there."
Mould thanked his assistant Steve Schaefer and physio Michael Buckler who worked overtime to keep the players on the field.
Meanwhile, Kel Sheather and Will Woolley were named in the NSW Country Under-16s team.
They represented a combined FNC and Mid North Coast team at the championships. The team made the final before going down 12-5 against Hunter.
"Our preparation was pretty limited but we were very happy with the result," coach Ern Sandral said.
"We actually beat Hunter in our first game which was great for the boys.
"They bonded as a team early and we couldn't have asked for anything more."
Jake Pennisi, Keoni Toseski-Solomona and Theo Van Der Merwe were selected in the NSW Country Under-15 team.
Four FNC players also made the NSW Country Under-14 team last month.
They were Caleb Barker, Alex Bilski, Ethan Mumford and Ryley Skaines.
