The 14-year-old was on a roll throughout the competition and surfed well above his years. "The waves were super fun throughout the competition," he said.

"The draw was really tough and this being my first year in the 16 and under division it is definitely one of the best wins I have had.

"All of the older guys are pushing their surfing so hard; I am really shocked that I was able to get the win.

"I love coming down to Victoria. It can get pretty cold but it turned out to be nice and warm."

McDonagh has been surfing in the Rip Curl series since he was 10 and opted to go up a division this year.

The next event is at Trigg Beach in Western Australia starting Friday.

"I've been surfing in the Rip Curl GromSearch series for a fair while now and it remains as challenging as ever," McDonagh said.

"The level of surfing is always really high as it's a contest that every single competitor really wants to win."
