Mackay 100yo reveals secret to a happy, long life

THE less you worry the happier you are and the longer you live.

That's what Mavis Lucas says anyway and it must be true, as she's just celebrated her 100th birthday.

About 35 people celebrated the milestone with her, including her children and grandchildren who travelled from Victoria and New South Wales to be with her.

"When I walked into her room her face lit up and she had this big smile, she didn't know I was coming," granddaughter Kelly Beard said.

"She was just chuffed that we all turned up because we don't get to see her very often."

When her granddaughter asked what her secret was she replied simply; "there's no point in worrying, it doesn't achieve anything".

Mrs Lucas grew up in Croydon, Victoria and moved to region in the early 1990s with her husband Frank.

They worked in the Rubyvale gem fields until 1992 when they moved into Mackay city to be with their daughters Vi Duryea and Yvonne Beard who lived here with their husbands at the time.

"(Mrs Lucas) was born into a time of uncertainty in the middle of the First World War (1916)," Mrs Beard said. "In those days they used horse drawn carts and their main transportation was on foot or bicycles."

At 14 Mrs Lucas left school to become a secretary in Melbourne city, an hour away on the train.

"Her teenage years were in the great depression," Mrs Beard said.

"She developed a love of dancing while she was working in Melbourne."

Her nanna also loves the birds and the flowers and always had an appreciation of gardening.

When asked what her favourite memories were Mrs Lucas replied "oh there are so many, I couldn't pick one."
