A MACHETE was used during an armed hold up at a South Golden Beach general store last night.

Tweed/Byron Local Area Command crime manager, Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen, said about 7.20am, a man in his mid-30s entered the store.

"He was armed with a machete or cane cutter, something similar," he said.

"The man demanded money from the workers there.

"A scuffle has ensued with one of the workers and that person sustained a minor injury to their hand."

The offender fled empty-handed in a small, older model white station wagon.

It was last seen heading south towards New Brighton.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the offence, or anyone who may have seen the car in the South Golden Beach or Ocean Shores areas.

The offender is described as being in his mid-30s, Caucasian, of skinny build, and wearing a blue hooded spray jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
