Luxury Chinese LDV SUV launches with $36,990 starting price

THE halo car for Chinese brand LDV, the seven-seat D90 luxury SUV, starts from $36,990 drive-away.

That price will buy the entry-level Mode derivative, while the range-topping Luxe costs $46,990 drive-away.

Featuring seven seats and described as "a mobile technology exhibition demonstrating what LDV is capable of”, the new D90 rolls into dealerships poised to battle the Hyundai Santa Fe (from $40,990 plus on-roads), Kia Sorento (from $40,990 plus on-roads) and the Mazda CX-9 (from $43,890 plus on-roads).

Basic equipment includes six airbags, blind spot monitor, autonomous emergency braking, front collision warning, reversing camera, 12-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 8-inch digital driver display, dual zone air con, radar cruise control, as well as man-made leather trim on front seats.

D90 Deluxe gains a sunroof, dual zone climate control air con, leather steering wheel, power tailgate, a driver's seat that is eight-way adjustable, four-way lumbar support, leather upholstery for the first and second rows of seats, and an eight speaker audio system.

Luxe adds a 360-degree exterior camera, panoramic sunroof, a driver's seat which has four-way lumbar support adjustment with heating, ventilation, massage and two memory settings, second row seats with electronic adjustment and heating function and a 12-speaker power audio system. The range-topper also has puddle lights under each door, a rear tailgate that opens itself at the wave of a foot under the bumper and may even plug in mains powered equipment with the 220 volt/150W power socket.

But already LDV has hinted the pricing won't last.

"We want to get the D90 out there; on roads and in driveways, to give Australian consumers a chance to get to know the vehicle,” says Dinesh Chinnappa, general manager of LDV Automotive Australia.

"However, we will have to recognise next year a simple business reality, particularly when it comes to the range topping flagship, the D90 Luxe. No one can pack this much technology, luxury or levels of equipment into a vehicle and hold the launch pricing at which the LDV D90 arrives in Australia.”

Power comes from a light and efficient turbocharged petrol engine generating 165kW of power and 350Nm of torque with a six-speed automatic. Average fuel consumption is 10.2 litres/100 km for the 2WD variant and 10.9 L/100 km for the 4WD.

The four-wheel drive system includes an electronic differential lock, with range selections of rock, mud, sand and snow.

Warranty coverage is five years/130,000km. A safety rating is yet to be released.

"The LDV D90 is much more than a new addition to our range,” Mr Chinnappa says.

"The D90, particularly the range topping D90 Luxe, is a demonstration of the advanced technical and design capability of LDV. It reveals the extensive inventiveness, creativity and technology with which LDV is now working. The D90 is a clear and unambiguous statement of intent of where LDV plans to go in the future, as it spreads its wings in the commercial, recreational and SUV market sectors.”
