Lucky to find a rental in the whole of Evans Head
SEARCH online for a long-term rental property in Evans Head and you’ll be lucky if a single property comes up.
Real Estate agent David Mason at Evans Head First National said, “It’s been the same for about 18 months. There is really nothing out there in terms of long-term rentals.”
“The whole of the North Coast is seeing a tight rental market. We simply don’t have enough housing in the region,” he said.
The first trickle of temporary workers for the Pacific Highway bypass have already snapped up a few holiday rentals at Evans Head, however the planned 400 bed donga village on Woodburn-Evans Head Rd, will cater to the influx of itinerant road workers.
"This is going to be a boon for the town," Evans Head Business Chamber of Commerce president Brian O'Farrell said.
"Building the donga will keep the pressure off rentals and holiday accommodation in the town."
Greens MLC Jan Barham said Northern Rivers coastal locations were particularly feeling housing stress. “NSW is experiencing gentrification of not only city-based suburbs but also in some coastal regional areas, which are suffering from affordable housing crisis due to the popularity of locations.”
“As at December 2014, only 23,964 dwellings were considered affordable for a low-income household in regional NSW,” she said.
