Lismore man wins trip to island paradise after Cup
NATHAN Goward is having trouble wiping the smile off his face after winning a $10,000 holiday to XXXX Island at last week's Lismore Cup.
The 32-year-old said after his mates won prizes playing shuffleboard he thought he would have a go, but he never expected to win.
"At first I didn't know if I had won to go into another draw, so when I was told I won the holiday I was stoked," he said.
"To me it felt like I had won the whole Lismore Cup; I was pumped."
"I had to put two pucks on the table and my puck with number eight on it was last on the table."
"The only reason I had a go was because a couple of mates had won towels and they started giving away sunglasses, so I thought I'd like to be in that."
This was the first time the Goonellabah man and his girlfriend Sharna Whybro had been to the horse races.
"We enjoyed the races; we had lots of fun with our friends," he said.
Since word spread that he had won, Mr Goward said he had been getting lots of phone calls from "friends".
"People who I haven't heard from for years have been calling me saying I heard you won the holiday."
Pumpkin Island, 15km off the Queensland coast near North Keppel Island has been unofficially renamed XXXX Island.
The 6.7ha idyllic paradise offers activities including fishing, touch footy, beach cricket, swimming or even barbecuing the catch of the day.
Mr Goward said he and his girlfriend are going to thank friends who invited them to the Lismore Cup by taking them on the holiday.
"It will be a nice holiday for me and my girlfriend because we haven't done anything like that before.
"I am also taking the couple who invited us to the races."
The two couples will be the only people on the island when they spend four days and three nights alone next June or July.
"I'm looking forward to racing around on the jet skis, relaxing and drinking."
