Low humidity keeps firies on toes

FIREFIGHTERS were kept busy yesterday in conditions Rural Fire Service duty officer Dave Cook described as dangerous.

Eleven RFS tankers attended a 12ha forest fire at Chowan Creek, near Uki, at 2am. A caravan was lost in the blaze.

Twelve RFS tankers were also called to a 49ha park at the Wollumbin National Park at Tyalgum and two crews attended a fire in the Koonyum Range at Mullumbimby.

Four crews also attended a grass fire in Eltham late on Saturday afternoon.

“Fire wise, the weather was extremely dangerous,” Mr Cook said.

“There was low humidity, fresh winds and warm temperatures - a bad combination.”
