Louise Owen jailed over crash that killed Casino grandmother

LENNOX Head woman Louise Maria Owen will serve her 18 month sentence in jail after home detention was refused in the Lismore District Court today.

The 54-year-old woman was sentenced to 18 months jail with a 12 month non-parole period after she was found guilty and sentenced in February of dangerous driving occasioning death over a 2012 crash that killed Casino woman Heather Flack and traumatised her four-year-old grandson.

Today the court decided whether that sentence would be served in jail or through home detention.

Owen appeared in the witness box for the first time during the trial and apologised to the family of the victim.

In handing down the sentence Judge L Wells said Owen had "lacked general compliance and failed to make herself available" to community corrections and mental health services that would show her ability to comply with home detention.
