Byron teen slams it with the best in Premier League tennis

UPSETS, injury and a couple of record-breaking long matches were all part of the fourth round of Northern Rivers Premier League tennis on Saturday.

In the top player match-ups at the Lismore Tennis Centre, Byron Bay youngster Louis Clark again showed he is ready to match it with the best.

With an Australian open men's ranking of 598, Clark took on the highly fancied and older junior Cody Atkinson, who is ranked 251.

After a close first set, Atkinson's lack of recent match play showed as Clark prevailed 6-3 6-1.

Doug Skipper of Murwillumbah won in a tough super tie-break over Lismore's Nathan Moore.

Alstonville/Lismore coach Paul Denning made his debut in the competition after an injury lay-off. He proved far too strong for Ballina's Dwayne Smith.

The battle of No 2 players prod-uced a couple of epic encounters.

Natalie Condello of Ballina toiled long and hard for her win over Josh Eckersley of Goonellabah.

After dropping the first set, Condello dug in to clinch the second set 7-5. She eventually got over the line 10-5 in the tie-break.

But the endurance award went to Murwillumbah clubmates Ethan Bruggy and William Bagnall.

They were locked in battle for2 hours 40 minutes before an exhausted Bagnall stole the win.

They finished up late in the day after many players had finished their singles and doubles - and had their lunch!
