THE newest addition to Bluesfest was launched today, bringing new meaning to the notion of flower power.

The Lotus Palace, a new performance space includes a solar-powered sound system, known as the Sunflower. The project has seen Southern Cross University produce the biggest solar-powered sound system in Australia.

Dr Barry Hill, contemporay music course co-ordinator at SCU, George Negus, festival director Peter Noble and Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson kicked off the second day of the festival in a panel discussion in The Lotus Palace.

The project is aimed at promoting sustainable initiatives to lessen the impact of large events on the environment.
