Lorde's Royals banned from radio in San Francisco

Lorde's hit song Royals has been banned from local radio in San Francisco this week, ahead of the World Series baseball championship, which will see the San Francisco Giants face off against the Kansas City Royals.

KFOG radio posted a picture of the Kiwi teenager on their Facebook page, writing: "No offense, Lorde, but for the duration of the World Series, KFOG Radio will be a "Royals"-free zone. We're sure you understand."

While there's no word on what Lorde thinks of the ban, Kansas City supporters are convinced the chart topper is backing their team.

Last year, the singer revealed her hit song was inspired by the baseball team, telling VH1: "I'd been kind of thinking about writing that song for a while and been pulling together a couple little lines here and there, and I had this image from the National Geographic of this dude signing baseballs.

"He was a baseball player and his shirt said Royals. I was like, I really like that word, because I'm a big word fetishist.

"I'll pick a word and I'll pin an idea to that."

The photo was of former Kansas City Royals player George Brett, who later sent Lorde her very own Royals jersey, signing the message: "You are royal to me".
