WHEN 86-year-old Joyce McMinn threw the sweet potato she bought from Coles into the vegie patch in her backyard, she had no idea that six months later she would be shocked by what she found.

When she went to dig up the crop, she needed her biggest shovel to unearth a massive, weirdly shaped five kilogram potato.

"I put the shovel under it and lifted it and said - my goodness," Joyce said.

She weighed herself on her household scales and then weighed herself holding the big sweet potato.

"Almost five kilograms," she said.

Joyce has lived at Gays Hill in Casino for 20 years and has always grown vegetables.

But she has never seen anything like the chicken-shaped potato.

She doesn't usually grow them and said maybe the exposed garden bed and warm weather conditions were the right environment for a potato growth spurt.

"I bake them," Joyce said, already planning on eating her garden treasure.
