Logies 2017: Meldrum's odd speech as Samuel Johnson wins Gold
SAMUEL Johnson's Gold Logie win at the 59th Annual TV Week Logie Awards was hijacked when his speech was taken over by Australian television legend Molly Meldrum.
The 38-year-old actor was lost for words as he walked on stage in front of Australia's A-list.
"Sorry, my family is all based out of a house in Preston," he began. "Among ourselves we call it the Prestonian Institute for the Temporary Defeated. I know you are watching in Preston - not tonight."
"For the last few weeks I've been insisting among my family I'll be called your Royal Logieness," he joked.
He recounted arriving back in Australia after Johnson's show The Secret Life of Us had begun airing and saw an episode where someone "shows her tits". The anecdote went on for several minutes before trailing off.
"He (Johnson) rings me from Broome, he said I've been offered this role of playing you in a mini series," Meldrum continued. "He went, 'OK when I get home from this bike, the unicycle (Johnson rode around Australia on a unicycle to raise fund for charity), I'll come across and study'."
"I said you always know - Sam, what are you talking about? You want to study me, I'll teach you how to be gay and be gay. He said, 'F*ck off!' He said, ' I can be a legend and go um, err, um'.
"I know it's very hard to play an old drama queen like myself, and you did a great job, right. So on behalf of the drama Queens of Australia, I would like to crown you also with my gold hat, here it is, well done. Thank you everyone."
And with that, Johnson was crowned with an akubra. And a team of people descended on the stage to wrap things up.
Meanwhile, Connie and family were around the television watching every moment of the awards and took to the Love Your Sister Instagram page to share their joy at Sam's win.
Connie is nearing the end of a long battle with cancer.
"My sister is succumbing to the perils of cancer after a three decade long struggle," Johnson said when accepting the Best Actor gong.
