Men learn to fight like pros with champion boxer

BETTER men are being built on the Gold Coast after training with an Australian boxing champion.

The group of 24 train daily under the tutelage of former Australian Junior Middleweight champion Gavin Topp, who began his 'Fight Like a Pro' program 10 years ago.

According to Mr Topp, 'Fight Like a Pro' began as an opportunity for men to come and prove themselves.

"Why do I get out of bed in the morning? I come to do this," he said.

"A bloke's got to answer three things and he'll answer them at some point.

"How did I get here? Why am I here? And possibly the most important, do I have what it takes?

"Some men want to climb Everest; some men want to climb Burleigh Headlands. It doesn't matter. Whatever that mountain inside of you is, it's got to be climbed."

The 10 week training program consists of cardio, fitness, boxing technique and sparring, all in preparation for Fight Night, where they will participate in an official boxing match in front of family, friends and other boxing fans.

Program trainer Will Collins is always impressed with the quality of matches during Fight Night and the entertainment value for spectators.

"It's very rare that it's a one sided fight, so it's always a good battle," he said.

"Gav manages to team them up really well. It's nearly always a good fight.

"It's exciting stuff, especially if you have a friend in there fighting away for his life."

Having fought in numerous professional fights, Mr Topp believes that when a man is in the ring, his true character is revealed.

"In that boxing ring you can't pass the ball, you can't tap out, you can't say I'll be back in a minute, you got to deal with the man on the inside and get a chance to man up," he said.

The program guarantees that everybody will be tested on a different level, therefore every man will get something different out of it, said Mr Topp.

"Generally what they want out of it and what they get out of it is just worlds apart," he said.

Tree climber Ben Lipari said the benefits of increased strength, fitness and muscle tone are evident, while father of eight Brian Wright said the friendships developed are a real positive.

Mr Topp said the objective is about making men better becoming best they can be.

"It's not about being the best; it's about being your best," he said.

"We're about making better husbands, about making better fathers, better sons, better businessman, better leaders in our community."

'Fight Like a Pro' partnered with Dad's in Distress Support Services (DIDSS), with the charity receiving the proceeds from each Fight Night.

"I believe there is a fatherless generation," said Mr Topp.

"There [are] so many boys in men's bodies. They haven't had an opportunity to be mentored and be told that they're good enough.

"This is what we're about. We were built to help these guys.

"We raise $5000-8000 every quarter for them, but the biggest thing they want from us is to spread the word, cause generally blokes don't talk, we just shut up and deal with it."

Fight Night will be held this Friday, March 22, at Jupiter's Casino, Broadbeach.

Tickets are available from www.fightlikeapro.com.au or call (07) 5568 0000 for more information.
