Restaurants top of their class

FIVE Northern Rivers eateries topped their class in recent Northern NSW restaurant awards.

Overall winners in the 2010 Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence for Northern NSW were a little further away but locals shone in two of the most hotly contested categories.

Byron Bay's Kinoko was the best Asian restaurant and Il Postino of Alstonville took the honours in the new restaurant contest.

Il Postino's head chef Joel Avey went to the awards ceremony on Monday at the Novotel Pacific Bay Resort in Coffs Harbour and said he was ‘over the moon' about the honour.

Il Postino had just celebrated its first birthday and this was a great way to celebrate, he said.

Other locals with something to celebrate are Ate, of Bangalow, which was named top breakfast restaurant, Lismore's Fire in the Belly was best pizza venue, and Byron Bay Beach Cafe picked up the top restaurant caterer prize.

Overall, Fiasco Ristorante and Bar in Coffs Harbour was named the top place to dine in Northern NSW and also won the Italian restaurant category.
