Local firies return

LOCAL firefighters dispatched to Singleton to assist other regions in need have returned safely.

About 30 volunteer firies from Alstonville, Wardell, Burringbar, Murwillumbah, Mullumbimby, Bilambil and Main Arm Rural Fire Service branches travelled in convey from Wardell to Singleton on Monday night, where they waited on standby to be deployed as a pre-emptive strike team where required.

With some of the worst fire conditions experienced for years, they were prepared for the worst but were luckily not needed beyond Singleton.

Some of the fire fighters who went on the mission said that while many people may think that the fire warnings were all just a 'storm in a teacup,' it was due to the reactions and pre-emptive measure that catastrophic conditions didn't turn into catastrophes.
