Hervey Bay bookseller has been Kindled out of business
JOHN Lawrence has been selling second hand books in Hervey Bay for 20 years.
His decision to close his store this June is the beginning of the death of books.
To walk into his store is to walk into a bazaar of second-hand love.
The musty smell and the sense of bargain conjured up by pre-loved books goes to learning, sharing and what a well thumbed page means about how we entertain ourselves these days.
"The people I have met are the thing," John said.
"It does not matter if they pull up in a Rolls Royce or on a bike with their backside hanging out, if they read books they are reasonable people."
A strong Australian dollar and the tourism drop has hurt him.
More than anything, he points the finger at technology.
The online book retailers are serious competition.
It is, however, the ability to download books at a cheap price on to tablets such as Kindle that has been a real killer.
John's top five good reads
- The Hobbit
- Lord of the Rings
- The Riftwar Saga
- The Frost
- Author Robin Hobb
