Live drag timing a feather in cap
PETROL fumes, hot cars and motorbikes will be the flavour this weekend when the Summerland Drags hit the tar at Casino airport.
It's the sole registered drag strip between Brisbane and Sydney and the only drag strip in NSW that runs live timing.
"That is why we do so well," race co-ordinator Roger Wood said.
"There are metropolitan strips in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth that have it, but we are the only regional one."
In live timing, competitors can do their runs and, when they get back to the pits, check their phone, tablet or other device and find their time already recorded.
"The reason we got live timing is because we can't afford traffic boards," Mr Wood said.
"Before live timing, to show times on race day we used to have a queue of drivers all wanting to know how they did."
According to Mr Wood, live timing uses software developed by volunteer Danny Bald.
It also relies on the rapid data-input typing skills of volunteers Donna Lamont and Melissa Wood.
Mr Wood sees it as a real feather in the cap.
"At the last race we had two fellas from Lismore bring their Nissan drifter cars and we have them back again," he said.
Mr Wood likened the drifter cars to being on ice skates as they waltz down the tarmac.
