Listen up, gas industry chief tells CSG opponents

OIL and gas industry group APPEA has reiterated the legitimacy of the CSG industry despite popular opposition.

Rick Wilkinson, APPEA's chief executive officer, said the stringent environmental assessments adhered to by natural gas producers in New South Wales were being ignored by protesters who were unwilling to listen to facts or engage in reasonable debate.

"For weeks a landholder has been willing to 'unlock' the gate and allow a company to proceed with work ... legally approved by authorities," Mr Wilkinson said.

"Natural gas offers the cleanest viable source of large-scale baseload and peaking power for Australia. It can be sourced safely and with minimal disturbance in line with some of the strictest environmental laws in the country."
