THOUSANDS may have gathered in Sydney for Gough Whitlam's memorial service, but they stayed away in droves at the Lismore Workers Club.

The Workers Club had been expecting a big crowd and had space for 120 people, but in the end only about 15 people actually turned up to watch the live TV coverage of the service on three big screens that had been set up.
