MAIA Mitchell has gone from Lismore to Los Angeles, the star of the Disney Original Film which is sweeping up the popularity ranks in the US, Teen Beach Movie.

She stars as McKenzie in the movie musical - an exuberant song, sand and surf fest set inside a retro beach party movie.

The former Trinity Catholic College student got her big break on the Australia children's show, Mortified, at 12, and since then has been climbing further up the success ladder.

The 19-year-old said she's proud of Teen Beach Movie, and said she felt very lucky with its success so far.

Her favourite part of filming was hard to pick, she said, how

ever the musical numbers were a blast, especially Can't Stop Singing, a scene between on-screen boyfriend Ross Lynch and herself which she described as "pretty hilarious".

While LA life is different to life on the Northern Rivers, Maia said she had found it easy to stay grounded by surrounding herself with the right people - like her all-Aussie housemates and her close-knit family. The newfound fame is something she said she won't ever get used to, however.

"I'm a very private person; I'm very low key, so it's a bit weird, but it's cool to have a younger fan base because it comes from a really positive base," she said.

After the "crazy great" success of Teen Beach Movie with its US premiere, Maia's waiting to see how Australia reacts when the film debuts on the Disney Channel Australia on Friday night.

She is also having a lot of luck with her other project, US TV series The Fosters, which she found out this week has been renewed for more episodes, and has been nominated for four Teen Choice awards - including a solo nomination for Maia in the Choice Female Summer TV Star. It's the first time she's been back on Aussie soil since January, and she said she'd missed it a lot. She will be back with her family in Lismore for her birthday next month, which she said she just can't wait for.
