Lismore Cup carnival the richest yet
Organisers yesterday revealed that the Centenary XXXX Gold Lismore Cup, set for September 25, would be worth $60,000, compared with the $40,000 it carried in 2006.
And after the horse flu-affected 2007 Cup was run three months late with a dramatically reduced $20,000 purse, Lismore's biggest race is set to return to its full glory.
The 2006 and 2007 winning trainer, Ross Stitt of Taree, has already indicated he will try to create history by setting his gelding Precise Timing for a third straight Cup win.
Great country cups horses Hosier, Panvale, Rousillon and Mack 'N' Me have won consecutive Lismore Cups but no horse has been able to win three in a row.
"How fitting it would be for this feat to be achieved in conjunction with the Centenary Lismore Cup," Lismore Turf Club secretary-manager Michael Timbrell said.
Timbrell also announced the Ireland Honda Lismore Big Maiden purse had been boosted to $30,000, while the Rousillon, the tradition Cup prelude, would carry $25,000.
The Lismore Workers Club Rousillon Handicap day is set for Sunday, September 21.
