Lismore Cup a sure winner next week

LISMORE Turf Club is preparing for a massive Cup day after Ballina Jockey Club's "awesome” Cup meeting last week.

Nominations for next Thursday's Lismore Cup meeting close today and secretary manager Scott Jones is expecting good fields given the weather, track rating and flow-on from the success of last Thursday's Ballina Cup meeting.

"Should be a huge day here,” Jones said.

"We've already sold out a couple of tents already. The track is in good nick too and rated a Good 4 at the moment.”

Jones said the Ballina Cup meeting was a fantastic lead-in to his club's feature meeting.

Ballina Jockey Club general manager Matt Bertram described last Thursday's Cup meeting as one of its best.

"An awesome day,” Bertram said.

"A really good day, good racing and all the information we have seen indicates everyone had a great time. it was a win-win for us as the turnover was solid as well, above what we budgeted.”

Cashing Up, trained at Eagle Farm by Barry Lockwood, won the $65,000 Slipway Ballina Cup (1600m) from Lordag and Cash Spinner.

The Brisbane gelding gave Lockwood, who started his training career in Tamworth, a second Cup winner and a double on the day after Skytrek had won earlier.

Grafton trainer John Shelton might have finished third in the cup with Cash Spinner but also won the Ballina Newmarket with Prince Of The Turf while Ballina trainer Bill Pholi also had success.

Coffs Harbour trainer Warren Gavenlock, who relocated from Armidale about six months ago, also won with Hard Merchandise on Cup day and then backed up with a double at Tamworth on Tuesday, winning the first two races on the card with Danishki and Miss Vega.

Matt Bertram hopes Lismore can have a similar day, weather-wise as well.

Ballina is now preparing for its future with plans for track redevelopment well advanced.

They have already lodged and had their DA approved and are waiting on a construction certificate.

He believes work on the new development is about six months away.

Meanwhile, Lismore Turf Club has been preparing for next Thursday's Cup meeting.

The feature race is the time honoured $60,000 XXXX Lismore Showcase Cup (2100m).

Next week's Cup celebrations start in earnest on Wednesday night at the Rous Hotel with the Cup Calcutta at 6pm.
