Lismore airport increases security

THE Federal Government has announced new mandatory security screening regulations which may result in the introduction of expensive screening equipment at the Lismore airport.

Lismore City Council managers were unavailable yesterday to confirm whether security screening would be beefed up next year as a result of the new screening rules.

A spokesperson for REX Airlines said it needed more time to formulate its response to the proposals.

The Aviation White Paper also stated thatfinancial assistance would be redirected toregional airports.

Ballina Shire mayor Phillip Silver said there would be no major changes to security at Ballina airport under the new regulations.

Under the security overhaul, a previous ban on passengers carrying tweezers and nail files in their carry-on luggage has been lifted. Airlines will also be able to use metal cutlery again.

The white paper stated that the Prohibited Items List would be revamped next year to focus on real security threats and promote less disruption for air travellers.
