Lightning midcourter to lead All-Stars in charity match

NETBALL: Sunshine Coast Lightning midcourter Laura Langman says she's honoured to be named captain of the Suncorp Super Netball All-Stars team, which will collide with the Australian Diamonds for bushfire relief in Sydney on Sunday.

The 33-year-old from New Zealand will lead a stellar side on to the court for the match, to raise money for communities affected by bushfires across Australia.

Her team will feature the likes of Jamaican goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler, England Roses goal keeper Geva Mentor and South African goal defence Karla Pretorius, an intercept genius who also plays for the Lightning in the Australian league.

"It's an honour to be involved in this incredible event and I am honestly humbled to be nominated captain of the All-Stars," she said.

"It has been special to watch the netball community rally together to help those affected by the bushfires and I jumped at the chance to put my hand up for selection.

"While the game serves a much greater purpose than just netball, when we get out on court, I anticipate a hard-fought battle between the Diamonds and our All-Stars team, in what will be a great spectacle for netball fans."

Fellow Lightning midcourter Laura Scherian is set to play in the Australian team.

The match will be Lisa Alexander's last as coach of the Diamonds, after eight years in charge.

It will be televised on Channel 9 at midday (Qld time) and streamed live on the Netball Live Official App.

All funds raised through Netball Australia's initiatives will be donated to a Natural Disaster Relief Fund which has been established through the Confident Girls Foundation with the purpose of supporting netball-specific bushfire relief and recovery projects.
