Life creeps up so cruelly sometimes

IS IT just me or is everyone sometimes saddened by life?

Two weeks ago my sister had just returned from her first trip to Paris and was talking about getting married. Her partner had accepted an exciting new job and her kids were happy. Life was good.

Brigid is the oldest kid in our family and it's fair to say she's been unlucky in love.

Married and divorced twice, she wasn't really looking for love two years ago when she met Mike, an incredibly tall gregarious logistics manager who loves art, wine and opera just as much as she does.

Mike is a former Army officer who when they met was managing the packaging and reverse logistics of a $50 billion mining project off the coast of WA.

Two weeks ago today Brigid reluctantly told me she was worried. Mike had failed to come home the night before last, he was silent and withdrawn, stressed about his new job and uncharacteristically cross.

The next day, Saturday, Brigid and Mike were supposed to meet for lunch after Mike watched his daughter play netball. Mike initially forgot about the lunch and when questioned couldn't remember going to netball.

He got lost driving home.

Urged by friends Brigid took Mike to hospital, he was admitted immediately and quickly deteriorated. By Sunday morning Mike was no longer lucid.

Later that day doctors confirmed the worst. Mike has a large butterfly-shaped tumour wrapped around his frontal lobe.

The past 14 days have been like a movie. My sister has watched her strong, vibrant, quite domineering man morph into someone almost unrecognisable.

Drugs have reduced the swelling, improving communication, but the tumour is inoperable. He's at home now and no-one really knows what will happen next.

I've actually just got off the phone. Brigid and Mike spent last night in Emergency after Mike woke confused.

Mike is fit, strong and deeply loved, it is a very good place to start this fight. But if my heart feels like it is breaking I can't imagine how it feels to be Brigid and I wish I wasn't so far away from her. Keep them both in your thoughts.
