LETTER: Trains are the answer to our ‘killer’ roads
YOUR editorial on May 19 about the terrible Bangalow to Lismore (and Casino) road 'screamed' to me this is a no brainer for our train services to be brought back!
The section from Bangalow sure needs fixing.
The Roads & Maritime Report says it is a major commuter route between Byron Shire and Lismore for 7000 to 12,000 motorists every day.
Yes, they still recommend a rail trail/bike track for recreational travel needs of cyclists of the Byron Bay coast to Lismore and this road would continue as a "principle freight route".
So we are all stuck on roads when the train line should be in use.
John Holland are operators of railway infrastructure of complex, diverse constructions, so when anti-rail people say the Casino to Mirwillumbah rail line cannot be repaired where needed, it is hogwash!
Ex-Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian was not sure about removing the rail tracks either for a bike track.
Duncan Gay said in Parliament rail lines would not be ripped up.
Don Page's gave a parliamentary speech in 2004 against Mr Costa's sudden closure of our rail service.
So all the above shows, we should have had our rail service all these years.
To all the people who back flipped and now say, you get a bike track instead of train services, shame.
