Lennox pair claims cash

THE Lennox Head Bowling Club's $4000 Minor/Major Pairs tournament attracted 28 teams and it was a local duo that took out the top prize.

Bowlers from Lennox Head, Ballina and Lismore took part in the two-day tournament, with Lennox Head pairing Grant Bowen and Gary Matthews emerging the winners to claim the $1000 first prize.

East Lismore bowlers Tony Cheli and Warren Morrissey finished second with Lennox Head's Glen Grady and Ray Chmielewski third.

Ballina pair Viv Ross and Wayne Fuller finished fourth.

Teams played seven games during the two days of competition at the Cherry Street Ballina Bowling Club.

"There was some good competition and all the players from the minor teams learned a lot," Ballina bowls co-ordinator Kris Lehfeldt said.

"No team won all seven games and there wasn't much in it."

The Lennox Head club was closed last November by owners Ramsgate RSL, citing financial losses, but it is set to re-open independently on December 12.

Since the closure the Lennox Head bowlers have continued to play club competition at Ballina each Tuesday and Wednesday.

"They've been very thankful and happy to continue playing here," Lehfeldt said.

"We've had 50 here on Tuesdays and they've all stuck it out.

"They might still play pennants here next year if the greens aren't up to scratch but we'll see what happens."
